Enhancement #1:
Improved handling of search expressions.
Enhancement #2:
Automatic suppression of index searching
Enhancement #3:
Multi-file searching no longer requires indexed files
#1:
Improved handling of search expressions.
GetARef is now able to handle
search expressions of the type common with many search engines on the
Internet, e.g., with Google.
1. with the expression
woman hypertension diabetes GetARef previously always looked for the
exact phrase; now GetARef by default searches as if the expression entered
was woman AND hypertension AND diabetes.
2. to search for specific phrases, include
them with parentheses, e.g., "find this phrase" "and this
phrase" (previously the same result would have required find this
phrase AND and this phrase).
3. to exclude certain words or
phrases put a hypen (a 'minus sign') immediatately before them, e.g.,
woman hypertension -diabetes (this is equivablent to woman AND
hypertension AND NOT(diabetes)).
#2:
Automatic suppression of index searching
Index searchinges can only be performed on
whole or part of delimited words. When therefore Use indexed search
was checked in the Tag, Get, or Locate dialogs GetARef
alwyas failed to find any references if the search expression contained a
phrase. Now GetARef instead automatically ignores the request for indexed
searching if the search expression doesn't allow it.
#3:
Multi-file searching no longer requires indexed files
Multi-file searching could previously only be
performed with index searching. This limitation has now been eliminated but
if the search expression allows, indexed searching is perform for the sake
of speed. Note, however, that if the search expression can be
searched using index files, multi-file searching fails for reference files
lacking index files. Creating index files is as quick as before, however, so
there is no reason not to re-index files regularly (command File|Create
index file(s) or on-the-fly while performing Multi-file searching) |

Bug fix #1:
GetARef didn't always recognize correct ISBN-13 numbers.
Bug fix #2:
When working with large reference collection it may useful to take advantage
of GetARef's ability to find 'similar' references: Identify a 'proband'
reference and let GetARef locate all similar references by the command
Search|Find similar references. You'll find that it works surprisingly
well. This command requires, however, that a index file exists for the
reference file (File|Create index file(s)). In the dialog showing
similar references it is possible to tag particular references but before
this bug fix, this tagging was sometimes not kept when the dialog was
closed. |

Enhancement:
Improved safety features including automatic creation of a backup file
(*_Backup.ref) when a file is compressed to eliminated deleted references
('DELETED'). |
|

2008-09-08 |
Enhancement:
More ways to define text before and after pseudo-citations. |
|
7.000.018 |
2008-05-15 |
Bug fix #1:
GetARef's Microsoft Word Add-in has been updated to properly paste text when
Shift-JIS encoding is used. Before this change, the text '#S' appeared
inserted in pasted references and pseudo-citations.
Bug fix #2:
When generating reference lists as text files (ANSI files), no line breaks
were inserted to separate references in the generated lists. |
|
7.000.017 |
2008-01-10 |
Enhancement:
Improved handling of Shift-JIS characters.
Bug fix #1:
After saving a reference entered in the Add a reference dialog, the
reference file was not remapped unless the display order was sorted. Now,
the file is remapped and the 'current reference' becomes the last added one.
Bug fix #2:
Release 7.000.016 introduced a bug that caused GetARef to incorrectly
eliminate the '[' before ISSN numbers added to disambiguate journals names
when saving references edited in the Edit/Add a reference dialog. |
|
7.000.016 |
2008-01-10 |
Enhancement:
Improved handling of Shift-JIS characters.
Bug fix:
GetARef sometimes confused the default directory of reference and format
files. |
|
7.000.015 |
2007-12-09 |
Bug fix:
When physically sorting a reference file, the sorting did not have the
expected effect if the sorted and unsorted reference file had the same name
and was located on a server (that is, had a server path). |
|
7.000.014 |
2007-11-29 |
Bug fix:
The names of some reference file stored on LAN servers could not be
recognized by GetARef.
Bug fix and alert:
After saving the content of the Edit dialog GetARef has sporadically
without any apparent reason or obvious pattern crashed (with the editing
saved). The likely reason for this is that the reference windows sometimes
get updated in an unfortunate order, i.e., before all necessary operations
of the save procedure have been completed. Extensive testing indicates that
this problem now has been resolved but any user that experrience this
problems, please report it promptly. |

2007-11-28 |
Adjustments:
Some journals and publishers offering downloads of citations uses
idiosyncratic versions of the RIS and the Endnote format. GetARef's import
(and paste) routines have been adjusted to increase the number of variants
supported. |
|
7.000.012 |
2007-11-21 |
Bug fix #1:
The automatic string conversion when creating search strings for PubMed did
not work properly.
Bug fix
#2:
While fields stored in the 'comment field' (translated titles, translators
and links) could be edited in the Edit dialog, they were not displayed in
the ordinary single reference view. |
|
7.000.011 |
2007-11-20 |
Adjustment:
PubMed has changed its display format which made GetARef to display
incorrectly some non-English characters during the retrieval and, more
importantly, to fail to import references.
Enhancement:
GetARef automatically modifies search strings to accomodate the characters
supported by PubMed (when searching for 'Björklund', GetARef automatically
replaces it with 'Bjorklund'). |
|
7.000.010 |
2007-10-25 |
Improvement:
Significantly improved handling of text with mixed Shift-JIS and Western
characters.
Bug fix #1:
Upon returning from the edit dialog or dialog for creating pseudo-citations
after double clicking a specific reference in the list view, GetARef did not
always return to the previous reference.
Bug fix
#2:
When working on LAN reference files under some conditions all associated
files were not saved.
Bug fix
#3: When creating pseudo-citations from LAN reference files the correct
reference files was not always used. |
|
7.000.009 |
2007-06-24 |
Improvement:
Since long, whenever there is a risk that a user may do an unintentional
'drastic' operation on a reference file, e.g., overwriting it with imported
references, GetARef creates a backup file. Such backup files are better used
exclusively for restoring files but if a backup file now is opened in
GetARef, GetARef now provides warnings by means of the online help file.
Adjustment:
Toxline from Medlar has changed its format. When display by Medlar, the
format it the same as for Medline records and GetARef can 'paste' records
copied to the Windows Clipboard.
Change:
When adding a reference using the 'Add a reference dialog', clicking the
green 'Save' button saved the references but did not close the dialog
(because the user might want to add another similar reference). Now the
dialog always closes once the references has been saved. To use an existing
reference as a 'template' for a new reference (e.g., chpaters in a book),
make it the current references and then use the command Edit|Add with
current ref as template.
Bug fix #1:
Under some conditions, GetARef unnecessarily included synonyms of complete
journal names when saving references in the Edit a reference dialog.
Bug fix
#2:
When saving unique or common references identified by comparing reference
files to open reference files stored on LAN servers, GeARef failed to update
the file on the LAN server. |
|
7.000.008 |
2007-06-12 |
Adjustment:
It is possible to 'paste' references in various formats into a GetARef
reference file. Some fields of the MEDLINE format caused some extra
characters to be included and this has now been corrected and some fields
(e.g., the containing the DOI number) was omitted. |
|
7.000.007 |
2007-06-07 |
Adjustment:
It was no longer possible to download references from PubMed due to changes in its communication protocol. |
|
7.000.006 |
2007-06-02 |
Improvement #1:
Markedly improved handling of Shift-JIS characters in all respects (display,
editing and handling mixtures of Japanese and Western text).
Improvement #2:
Multiple minor adjustements to stream-line the interface.
Bug fix#1:
Release 7.000.005 did not install GetARef's Add-in for Word 2003 (although
it worked for Word 2007 and earler Word versions).
Bug fix
#2:
When working on reference files stored on a network, GetARef did not altways
automatically update all associated files when the reference file was
closed. |
|
7.000.005 |
2007-03-25 |

GetARef's add-in for Word (GetARef 7.0 Add-in.wll) has been restored to
handle superscript and subscript in the same way as the default in Word (and
as in GetARef 6.0 Add.in.wll).
Adjustment #2:
Additional improvements for those who need to initialize GetARef installed
on a server.
Bugfix:
The OK button in the dialog used to select journal names was inactive (it
was, however, possible to select a name by double-clicking). |
|
7.000.002 |
2007-01-22 |
Enhancement #1:
Managing GetARef installed on a server has been improved significantly, see
Installing GetARef on a server.
Enhancement #2:
It is now possible to 'paste' journal references also in ISI format.
Adjustment:
The server of
www.authorinstructions.com has applied stricter security rules and
therefore calls from GetARef to request format files had to be modified.
Bugfix:
GetARef did not correctly check for new releases on the GetARef web site. |
