Information primarly for users of Version 5.0:

It is DatAid's policy to continually make improvements and correction available to GetARef's users. Accordingly, within each major version (3, 4, 5, etc), new updates have regulary been published on GetARef''s web site. Accordingly, the latest release of GetARef's main program (version 5.001.030) and import routines (version 5..001.024) are fairly close to GetARef 6.0 with respect to functionality.

Yet, the accumulated enhancements in GetARef 5.0 together with the enhancements described below warrants a new version number.

Continuity

  • Reference files and format file created with GetARef 4.0 and GetARef 5.0 can be used without modifications. Format files created in GetARef 6.0 cannot be used with earlier GetARef versions.
  • Edited or added journal name definitions in the journal name databases of GetARef 4.0 and 5.x can easily be imported to GetARef 6.0.

  • GetARef 6.0 supports 'initialization' of GetARef for new users on a single computer once GetARef has been installed by an administrator. This obviates the need for each user to makes a user-specific full installation and makes it easier to keep GetARef updated
  • Memory leaks related to some threaded operations have been elimianted.
LeftArrow.gif (1755 bytes) News - Display
  • The height of the "reference proper window" (top window in the single reference display containg the actual reference) is now properly adjusted to the amount of text whatever font used.
  • Improved handling of scrolling among references. In particular, the time required to update individual single lines in the single line display has been reduced and thereby it's now quicker to scroll upwards (PgUp).
  • Changing the font used for displaying references should affect the current language only. In 5.1 it affected the font of all languages.
LeftArrow.gif (1755 bytes) News - Import
  • GetARef automatically creates a backup file of the original reference file if the user when importing references decides to overwrite (rather than append references to) a reference file. In other words, when a reference file is inadvertently overwritten when importing references, GetARef automatically creates a backup file.
  • Importing references is no longer threaded (i.e., GetARef is fully occupied while importing references).
  • GetARef now imports surnames with hyphens, e.g., 'Smith-Brown' in names appearing in dumpf iles from WebSPIRS (CAB and Current Contents).
  • Adjusted the dialog used for importing from PubMed to the new 'short version display' retrieved from PubMed. Also, selecting only some of the references displayed in the short list has been simplified.
  • Old PubMed records (e.g., from the 1950's) may have authors names in capital letters only. These are changed by GetARef to a mix of upper and lower cases.
  • GetARef recognizes the new PubMed download format and handles records 'In press' ('aheadofprint')
  • GetARef has been adapted to numerous new variants of Endnote and RIS import formats that has used by various publishers.

  • GetARef now supports DOI links (Digital Object Identifiers) from individual references to their corresponding electronic records.

  • Support for all Word versions (7-2003) by means of a single new Add-in file.
  • Import and export references in the BibTex file format.

  • Significantly improved support for completing Latex documents, e.g., GetARef now handles the include directive of LaTex documents and numbered reference lists are flawless.
